07
Atatürk Evi

Atatürk Evi

A restored late-19th-century mansion in the Odunpazarı district where Atatürk stayed in 1920 during the War of Independence, now a museum with period furniture and personal effects. It sits among the best concentration of traditional bay-windowed timber houses in Eskişehir, on streets that are a pleasure to wander in their own right.

02
OMM Modern Museum

OMM Modern Museum

Kengo Kuma's stacked-wooden-cube building is one of the most beautiful contemporary museums in Turkiye. The collection of modern Turkish art is excellent, and the cafe and gift shop are first class. Allow two hours.

04
Kursunlu Kulliyesi

Kursunlu Kulliyesi

A classical Ottoman complex completed in 1525, including a mosque, madrasah and caravanserai. The inner courtyards now host the Meerschaum Museum and small workshops selling the famous white-stone pipes.

06
Hamamyolu

Hamamyolu

A pedestrianised boulevard with cafes, restaurants, craft stalls and a constant flow of students. One of the most walkable streets in Turkiye and where most evenings begin. Live music at weekends.

08
Eskişehir Archaeology Museum

Eskişehir Archaeology Museum

The Eti Archaeology Museum holds the finds of this archaeologically rich region, with artefacts spanning the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Much of the collection comes from excavations at nearby Dorylaion (Şarhöyük) and Küllüoba. Reopened in a modern building in 2011, it is well laid out and a good primer on Phrygian Anatolia before heading out to the valley.

Food and Cuisine

Eskisehir food has a strong Tatar Turkish heritage thanks to historic migration, which produced çibörek, the flat pastry stuffed with raw minced meat and fried to order. Add the famous balaban kebab, crisp student-priced pide and a big cafe and patisserie culture. Everything is affordable, casual and student-friendly.

The Signature
Çibörek

A half-moon of dough stuffed with raw minced lamb, onion and spices, fried to order in hot oil. Crisp outside, juicy inside. Eat at Tatar-run shops like Besler Cig Borek, five or six in a sitting.

Local Specialty
Balaban Kebab

A long skewer of cubed lamb cooked over a charcoal pit, served with grilled pepper and tomato on flatbread. Simpler than the better-known urban kebabs but distinctively Eskisehir. Balaban Restaurant is the classic address.

Sweet Finish
Met Helvası

A regional sesame and honey halva, much lighter and more fragrant than the supermarket version. Often served at breakfast with kaymak clotted cream. Buy from traditional shops near Odunpazari.

Crimean Tatar Pastry
Göbete

A Crimean Tatar pastry that travelled with the community to Eskişehir in the nineteenth century and remains a local speciality: yufka layers stuffed with minced lamb, potato and pumpkin, folded into a flat parcel and baked until crisp. Cut into squares for serving. Heavier and earthier than çibörek, with a longer cooking time. The Tatar restaurants in the Odunpazarı district list it as a separate menu item; eat it with airan and a chilli sauce on the side.

Poppy Pastry
Haşhaşlı Çörek

A coiled or layered pastry filled with ground black poppy seeds, butter and sugar - a regional speciality of inland central Anatolia that reaches its highest expression in the Eskişehir and Afyon belt where poppy is the major crop. The seeds give the filling a slightly bitter, nutty character that the sugar tempers. Sold at the historic bakeries around Odunpazarı and at the Friday morning village markets. Eaten with tea, never coffee.

Lentil Dumpling
Mercimek Mantısı

A Tatar variation of mantı specific to Eskişehir: small dough squares filled with seasoned red lentils rather than the usual minced meat, boiled and served with garlic yoghurt and chilli butter. A vegetarian-by-tradition dish - reflective of the Crimean Tatar community's adaptation of available ingredients. Lighter than meat mantı, with a sweeter and more vegetal flavour. Listed at the Tatar restaurants in Odunpazarı alongside çibörek and göbete.
