Tea country

Four highland bases, eight days, and the country becomes a different country.

The eastern Black Sea is wet, green, and steep. Tea terraces run vertical up the mountains, the rivers move fast, and the road from Trabzon east curls through cloud forest, monasteries, and villages most Turks have never set foot in.

You will base in four places: Trabzon for the start, Camlihemsin for the Firtina valley and the highland yaylas, Borcka for Karagol and Macahel, Savsat for the final forest stretch. Most days have a hike. Bring waterproofs in any month.

Black Sea Highlands
Day 01 / 08

The eastern Black Sea is the wettest, greenest part of Türkiye, and the part that surprises Turks themselves. Trabzon to Savsat, four highland bases, hiking most days, the country at its most alpine.

Day01
Trabzon · Old city

Settle into Trabzon, walk the old quarter

StayTrabzon centre

Don't missTrabzon Hagia Sophia
EatAkcaabat köftesi

Land in Trabzon, the historical capital of the eastern Black Sea coast. Once the seat of the Trabzon Empire, a Byzantine successor state that lasted into the fifteenth century. The city today is a working port with a small old core worth a day.

Start in the Kemeralti bazaar, the oldest commercial quarter in the city. Cobbled lanes, coppersmiths, fabric shops, and the old hans where you can still feel the city's earlier life. Alacahan, a restored historic han in the bazaar, is a good spot to slow down, take photos, and have a coffee.

Head over to the Trabzon Hagia Sophia, west toward the shore, about 45 minutes on foot if you are open to it, or a short ride. Not the Istanbul one. This is a thirteenth century Byzantine church on a hillside above the sea, with original frescoes still visible inside. About an hour.

Late afternoon, head up to Boztepe, the hill above the city. The tea gardens here look out over the whole of Trabzon and the sea beyond. Have a glass of tea in the late light, the view is the point.

Dinner in town. Try Akcaabat kofte, the spiced lamb meatballs from the Akcaabat district, one of the city's best-known dishes.

Rent a car

Pick the car up in Trabzon. At the end you can either drive it back to Trabzon, around three hours from Savsat, or arrange a one way rental and drop it at Rize-Artvin airport, which is closer to the highlands. One way drop-offs can cost significantly more, sometimes a lot, so check the fee carefully when you book and weigh it against the drive back. Either works, depending on where you fly out from.

Day02
Trabzon · Sumela

A monastery on a cliff

Don't missSumela on the cliff

Day trip to Sumela Monastery, the Greek Orthodox monastery cut into a cliff face above the Altindere valley. Around 45 kilometres from Trabzon, an hour's drive. The monastery dates to the fourth century in legend, the standing buildings to the thirteenth. The frescoes inside are partial but striking. There is a steep walk up from the parking area, allow two to three hours for the visit including the climb.

Lunch in Macka at one of the trout restaurants along the river on the way back. Alabalik, the local trout, is farmed in pools fed by mountain streams. It is typically fried in butter, the regional way.

Back to Trabzon for the evening. If you have an extra day, you can spend it on the Uzungol side, the glacial lake at 1100 metres. Be aware that Uzungol is heavily developed and crowded in summer, so manage expectations. If you only have the one day here, skip it and save your time for Camlihemsin tomorrow, which is the better highland base.

Day03
Trabzon → Camlihemsin

East along the coast, up into the green

StayCamlihemsin lodge
MoveDrive 3h east
Don't missFirst view of Firtina
EatMuhlama (kuymak)

Rent a car in Trabzon. This is the day the route opens up, and from here on a car is what makes the highland valleys reachable on your own schedule.

Drive east along the coast, then turn inland up the Firtina Valley to Camlihemsin, around two and a half hours total. Stop in Rize on the way, this is tea country, and the steep coastal hills are covered in plantations that climb almost to the snowline. If you want a tea garden built for visitors, Ceceva (Haremtepe) in the Cayeli district is the photogenic one, neat geometric tea terraces around a wooden Black Sea house, popular for photos rather than a working plantation. It sits a short detour off the coast road.

Base in Camlihemsin or one of the guesthouses up the valley. This is the better highland base than Ayder, quieter and central to everything you will want to reach over the next two days. The food here is excellent, especially muhlama (also called kuymak), the cornmeal and cheese dish that is the regional staple.

Settle in, eat well, sleep early. Tomorrow is a full highland day.

Day04
Camlihemsin · Firtina valley

Highland yaylas and the Firtina river

StayPokut highland
MoveDrive + hike 3h

A full day up the valley from Camlihemsin. The road follows the Firtina River through forest and mist, with stops along the way.

Zilkale first, around 13 kilometres up, a medieval castle perched on a ridge above the river gorge. Then the Simsir Ormani (boxwood forest) and on to Palovit Waterfall, reached by a side road off the Cat junction. The falls drop around fifteen metres through dense green forest.

Continue to Elevit Yaylasi, a highland plateau at around 1800 metres, about 35 kilometres from Camlihemsin. Wooden houses scattered across grass slopes with peaks behind, this is the classic Black Sea highland scene.

This is a full day on its own with the driving up and back, so do not try to add the Pokut side of the valley today, that is a separate trip. Mist descends fast up here in summer and can close the views in minutes, so start early and be flexible. Back to Camlihemsin for the evening.

Day05
Pokut & Ayder

Pokut at sunrise, Ayder hot springs

StayAyder lodge
MoveHike + drive
Don't missHot springs after rain
EatKaradeniz pilavı

Start early with Pokut Yaylasi, one of the most photographed plateaus in the country, wooden houses scattered along a ridge above the cloud line. The road up beyond the paved sections is steep and unpaved, so arrange a local 4x4 and driver through your guesthouse, it is the safe and easy way up. Pokut can be very foggy and rainy even in summer, and mist can close the views entirely, so check conditions with your driver the day before and be ready to be flexible.

Come back down by midday. If you are feeling good and the weather holds, drive yourself up to Ayder Yaylasi, around 17 kilometres from Camlihemsin on a paved road that any car can manage. Wooden chalets, grazing cows, and the green slopes the region is known for. Ayder gets lively in the evenings in season, so it can be a fun place to end the day.

Stay in Camlihemsin or Ayder for the night. Tomorrow you move east.

StayBorcka lodge

Drive back down to the coast and east toward Artvin province, basing in Borcka rather than Artvin city centre. Borcka is the better base for everything you will do tomorrow, closer to the lakes, the valleys, and the waterfalls.

The coast road is scenic, with steep green hills above and the sea below. Stop in one of the small coastal towns for lunch on the way. Settle into Borcka in the evening.

Start with Borcka Karagol, a landslide lake set in deep forest around 25 kilometres from Borcka, the still black water reflecting the trees around it. The platform above the lake gives you the panoramic view. Mornings are best, both for the light and the quiet.

Then into the Macahel (Camili) valleys, the chain of villages along the Georgian border that sit in some of the densest forest in Turkiye. This is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with primary forest still standing. Visit the Iremit Mosque, a historic wooden mosque built without nails, and the Maral Waterfall, which drops dramatically through the forest. Macahel honey is dark mountain forest honey, distinctive and worth taking home if you have room.

The roads here are narrow and winding, take your time. Back to Borcka for the evening.

Drive up to Savsat and Savsat Karagol, a second landslide lake inside the Karagol-Sahara National Park, set even deeper in forest than Borcka Karagol. The drive up through the Coruh valley is part of the experience.

Late afternoon, head to Yavuzkoy for sunset. The viewpoints here look out over the mountains and valleys, and the light at this hour is the photograph the region is known for.

From here, begin the return. Depending on your flight, you can drive back to Trabzon (around five hours) or fly out from the closer Artvin-Rize Airport on the coast if the schedule works. If you plan to drop the car at Artvin-Rize rather than return it to Trabzon, confirm with the rental company in advance that a one-way drop there is allowed and what it costs, sort this out when you pick the car up in Trabzon.

General notes

Getting around. A rental car is the only sane option here. The villages are spread out, the roads are mountain roads, and public transport is patchy. Pick up in Trabzon airport, drop in Kars or back in Trabzon. Mountain driving experience helps.

Weather. Even in summer, afternoons can fog over and evenings can be cold up at 1,800-2,200m. Pack a waterproof shell, warm layer, and walking shoes that handle wet rock. Tea everywhere.

Where to stay. Trabzon centre is fine for two nights. From Camlihemsin onward, look for highland lodges (boutique pansiyon, family-run) rather than chain hotels. Some Pokut and Macahel options are remote and book months ahead in July and August.

Lock the highland stays in first.

The Camlihemsin, Pokut and Macahel pansiyons are the bottleneck in season. Sumela and the rental car are easier to slot in.
