The street, the bridge, the ferries
Land in Istanbul, base in Beyoglu or Karakoy. The light in Istanbul is best understood on foot and from the water, and you want to be on the side of the city where both are easy to reach.
Afternoon, walk from Karakoy up through Galata to the tower. The streets here are the city's best for candid street photography: steep alleys, laundry lines, cats in doorways, vendors framed by old stone. Late afternoon light drops between the buildings in slots.
Take the ferry from Karakoy to Kadikoy around sunset. The crossing gives you the full Istanbul skyline, Sultanahmet mosques, Galata Tower, the bridge, all backlit by the evening sky. Shoot from the upper deck. The return ferry is just as good in the blue hour. For more time on the water, see the Bosphorus cruise in the recommended experiences below.
Dinner in Karakoy. Sleep early, tomorrow is a walking day.
